Getting there and around
Airport
Lisbon Portela Airport is located 7km (4 miles) from Lisbon city centre.
From the Airport to downtown Lisbon:
Several buses stop right outside the arrivals terminal, and if you don't have large luggage, you can take buses 44, 745, or 83 that run past the major avenues uptown and end up in the old city center. Those with luggage should take either the AeroBus or AeroShuttle bus services, which run between the airport and the city center. Taxis are also a fast way to reach the city center. They are lined up outside the terminals.
Public transport:
Metro - Underground
The Lisbon underground railway, recently remodelled and extended, presently runs beneath a large tract of the city. The new stations have been built to designs by some of the best-known national architects and artists.
The Metro, as it is known, has four lines identified by names and colours that permit one to quickly arrive at the historical centre of the city and visit different points of interest. At rush hour, it is always the best option.
Buses, Trams and Lifts
Journeying above ground is the best way to get to know the city. Should you decide to take the Trams or Lifts you will be treated to splendid scenery reflecting many authentic aspects of the city.
Riding tram 28 just for the experience is a must in Lisbon. Tram 15 is also the best way to reach Belem from downtown.
Trains and Ferry Boats
It is also possible to get to know Lisbon by train, which is the more convenient means of travelling through the surroundings. Ferryboats equally take you across the river.
Walking
Walking around is actually one of Lisbon's biggest pleasures and it is the best way to experience the old quarters, all the way to the castle. Several viewpoints offer refreshments, stunning views, and a break to sit down if needed.
